A wonderful sunrise today. The vertical column of light appears to be some weather phenomenon that I can't put a name to.

Sun pillar, yes. Nice. I normally see them in the west at sunset. Means there's ice in the sky - which makes sense as it's been sub-zero all day here today which is east of you (well, most places are, aren't they? :-) )
